Understanding the Importance of Smear Tests…

Why is the topic of cervical cancer important to me?

As a GP, I’ve seen first hand how important it is for women to attend regular smear tests, even if it means stepping out of their comfort zone. I’ll never forget two patients, whom I’ll call Caroline and Sam (not their real names), whose stories have stayed with me.

Caroline, 34 and a mother, had received three reminder letters to attend her smear test but hadn’t followed through. When she came to me with unexplained shortness of breath, I sent her for tests. Sadly, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer that had spread to her lungs. Caroline passed away, leaving behind her young son and husband, and her story serves as a tragic reminder of the risks of missing screenings.

Then there’s Sam, a busy mom of four, who was late for her smear test by about six months. Her results showed pre-cancerous cells, but thanks to prompt treatment and follow-up, she’s now back to routine screening. Sam learned the hard way not to delay her tests, and I’m glad she did.

These experiences have reinforced my belief that smear tests are crucial in detecting and preventing cervical cancer. Early detection can save lives, and I urge all women to stay on top of their screenings. Don’t wait until it’s too late—make your health a priority today.

What Are the Symptoms of Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer often doesn’t show symptoms in its early stages. However, as the cancer progresses, common symptoms can include:

  • Heavier-than-usual periods
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Bleeding after sex
  • Bleeding after menopause

If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to speak to your doctor right away. Early diagnosis can make all the difference.

Can You Prevent Cervical Cancer?

Yes! In the UK, the NHS offers free cervical cancer screening for all women aged 25 to 64 who are registered with a GP. Smear tests are designed to detect abnormal cells on the cervix before they develop into cancer. These changes are known as CIN (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia), and depending on the severity, CIN can either be monitored or treated to prevent cancer from developing. Here at The Dr Jenni Clinic we offer various levels of testing to ensure further clarity and understanding on your cervical health.

If you have ever been sexually active, whether with a man or a woman, you should attend regular smear tests. They are a crucial step in preventing cervical cancer.

Why Is Going for Your Smear So Important?

When abnormal changes are detected early (before they turn into cancer), they are treatable! Regular smear tests are key to ensuring that potential issues are caught and managed before they become serious.

Did You Know?

There was a notable increase in women attending smear tests following the tragic death of Jade Goody in 2009. Unfortunately, in the years since, the uptake has steadily declined. As of March 2017, the uptake was 72%—the lowest in twenty years. In 2016, it was 73%, and in 2011, it was 76%.
